I met with the parks coordinator and a city sanitational engineer shortly after my last post. The good news is that since I sent that photo (the one of the couch in the canal) to them, they sent out a crane operator to pull it out. The old couch is now removed. The Canal still needs a lot of work though. There is a never ending amout of garbage being thrown in, and blown in off the road.
The city was kind enough to supply Natsuko and I with some garbage grabber tools, safety vests, and a huge pile of trash bags. It's important to wear the vests when we're picking up trash, because apparently it will help discourage people from throwing more into the canal. I guess when people realize that other humans are picking up the crap they toss out onto the street, they decide not to litter.
FYI...there is A LOT of crap in that canal.
Here's a list of some amazing things we found in The Queens Canal this weekend:
-a LEGO man
-$2 coin (Natsuko used it to buy coffee)
-a car bumper
-a chevrolet truck wind deflector
-1 pair of pink thong panties
-a variety of old condoms
-potato chip bags
-fast food containers
-2 sofa cushions
-1 duvet cover
-1 YVR luggage cart (This is a huge mystery... how did it get this far from the airport ?)
-batteries
-1 fluorescent tube light bulb
-1 orange balloon
-4 tennis balls
The thing we found the most of was cigarette butts and cigarette packages. I have nothing against smokers, but why do so many of you throw your cigarette butts into the street? I had no idea. It's garbage ! If you want to smoke, then put your garbage in an ash tray ! And if you can't find an ash tray then don't smoke !

Beadle

You can now hold a garage sale with those items and raise money for the canal!
